Atomic-4 & Fuel System

[Home]

I’ve taken a number of pictures of the Atomic-4 engine, the fuel system installation, and the raw-water cooling system as a reference for both me and for those with a similar setup.  I’ve found that the pictures provide a valuable reference to my setup as I continue to learn proper corrective and preventative maintenance for this crucial system.

A4 Top Front

Here is a view of the top front of the engine.  It clearly shows the oil filler cap, the flywheel cover, the oil pressure sending unit with an oil direct read “steam” gauge installed by the PO.  Also visible is the thermostat housing.

Another view of the front of the engine.  The PO did a nice wiring job.
A4 Water Pump

A picture of the A-4 on the water pump side.  In addition to the water pump, you can also make out the transmission shift lever on the left, distributor cap upper right, and oil dipstick.
A4 distributor

This view shows the coil, al four spark plugs, the transmission shift lever, and the exhaust and raw water discharge.
A4 exhaust

Here is a better view of the exhaust and water discharge.
A4 tranny

A picture of the transmission shifter arm and the unique mount that allows purchase for the shift lever mounted in the cockpit.  The blower intake hose (lower) and the blower exhaust hose (upper) are clearly visible.

A picture of the stuffing box, A-4 transmission, and exhaust.
exhaust lift

A picture of the wet exhaust system.

The Atomic-4 in her “cave”.
fuel filter

The fuel/water separator and fuel filter system installed during winter haul out 2001.  I typically change the filter element once a season unless I suspect that there is water or contaminants in the fuel, in which case I’ll change until clean.
Fuel Hose

A picture of the new fuel supply hose and the fuel vent hose, both new in 2001 to replace original clear hose that had deteriorated to the point the boat was beginning to smell like gas.  Mounted on the bulkhead behind the 18-gallon fuel tank is the raw water inlet Jabsco filter.  The fuel tank is beneath the starboard aft quarter bunk.
